The advice I give everyone before their first Seattle trip—with a little help from Uncle Dave.
Go early, watch the market wake up, then wander the lower levels and surrounding streets instead of rushing through.
Seattle makes more sense from the water. Even a simple ferry ride gives you skyline, mountains and Puget Sound in one shot.
This is where Uncle Dave enters the chat: steakhouse, seafood or a polished dinner night absolutely belongs on the itinerary.
Ballard, Capitol Hill, Fremont and the International District each show you a completely different Seattle.
Layers and a light rain jacket beat carrying an umbrella everywhere. A gray day is still a very Seattle day.

Seattle is one of those cities where my travel style and Uncle Dave’s travel style meet in the middle.
I will happily eat a doughnut, ride a ferry and wander Pike Place on a budget—but then Uncle Dave will remind me that sometimes you should put on something nice, order the steak and let the city show off a little.
He has been visiting Seattle for decades, so the nicer picks in this guide are lovingly known as Uncle Dave suggestions: tried, tested and usually accompanied by a reservation.
My favorite Seattle trips balance both versions. Spend smart where you can. Splurge where it is worth it. And never waste a meal at the Space Needle.

SEE OR SKIP?
THE HONEST VERSION
See it if the history makes you smile. Skip the giant line if all you want is coffee.
See the view once. Then, per Uncle Dave, please go eat somewhere better.
See it. It is touristy because it is fun, and that is allowed.
Skip it. Seattle gets much more interesting once you add neighborhoods.
Do not skip Seattle because of rain. Bring layers and keep going.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
SMALL DETAILS. BETTER TRIP.
Seattle weather changes quickly. A light waterproof layer is more useful than dressing for one forecast.
It is one of the easiest ways to move between the airport, downtown and several neighborhoods.
Do not treat it only as transportation. The ride itself is one of the best Seattle experiences.
Uncle Dave restaurants and popular Seattle tables are not the place to rely on last-minute luck.
If Mount Rainier is out, enjoy it. Seattle locals know that view is never guaranteed.
