The advice I would give anyone before their first trip to Cartagena.
For a first trip, being able to walk the old city changes everything.
The streets are beautiful all day, but sunrise gives you cooler air, softer light and fewer crowds.
Cartagena’s restaurant scene is far too good to wing every night.
Grab a drink, find a spot and let the Caribbean light do the work.
Cartagena has real nightlife—rooftops, clubs, salsa and a city that gets better after dinner.

Cartagena is almost unfairly beautiful.
The old city gives you the color, balconies and Caribbean romance you came for—but what surprised me was how much there is beyond the postcard version.
Make dinner reservations. Explore Getsemaní after dark. Have the rooftop cocktail. Dance. And if you can, give yourself one day on the water so you get both sides of Cartagena.
Come for the streets. Stay for the food, music and very late nights.

SEE OR SKIP?
THE HONEST VERSION
Skip it if animal welfare concerns you. Cartagena is wonderfully walkable anyway.
See it if convenience matters. Choose the islands when the beach itself is the priority.
Absolutely see it—preferably once in daylight and again after dark.
Have a drink for the atmosphere, but do not assume the prettiest square has the best dinner.
See them if you have the time. Just choose your boat or beach club carefully.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Plan early walks, long lunches and afternoon breaks. Cartagena does not reward pretending humidity is not happening.
For longer distances, use reputable taxis or ride options available to you rather than accepting random offers.
Confirm prices before beach chairs, taxis, tours or street services so there are no surprises.
The city’s strongest tables can fill up, especially on weekends.
Dinner turns into cocktails, cocktails turn into dancing, and suddenly it is very late. Cartagena does that.
