BARCELONA

THE FIRST FIVE

Barcelona isn’t a city you conquer.
It’s one you settle into.

Gaudí, tapas, vermouth and beach days.
You will never go hungry, thirsty or pale.

Colorful architecture and city views in Barcelona

THE FIRST FIVE

The advice I give everyone before their first Barcelona trip.

01 LEAVE LA RAMBLA

Walk it once, then disappear into El Born or the Gothic Quarter.

02 BOOK GAUDÍ EARLY

Reserve Sagrada Família and Park Güell before the best times disappear.

03 WATCH THE SUNSET

Head toward the Bunkers del Carmel for panoramic city views.

04 EAT DINNER LATE

Stop fighting the schedule. Barcelona is better when you slow down.

05 ORDER VERMOUTH

Even when you think you do not like it, give Barcelona a chance.

CASUAL & ICONIC

  1. Bo de B Massive sandwiches near the water and a longtime guide favorite.
  2. Parking Pizza Excellent pizza in a cool, industrial-feeling dining room.
  3. La Pallaresa Churros, chocolate and a classic stop near Carrer de Petritxol.
  4. La Boqueria Go early, wander once and choose the crowded counters carefully.
  5. Can Paixano Cava, sandwiches and a wonderfully chaotic local institution.

GAUDÍ

  1. Sagrada Família Book the interior. The light and architecture are extraordinary.
  2. Park Güell Gardens, mosaics and unmistakable Gaudí imagination.
  3. Casa Batlló Color, curves and one of Passeig de Gràcia’s defining buildings.
  4. La Pedrera Sculptural architecture and one of the city’s most memorable rooftops.
  5. Palau Güell A darker, dramatic Gaudí building near La Rambla.

NEIGHBORHOODS

FIVE DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF BARCELONA

01 Gothic Quarter Historic alleys, plazas, hidden bars and late-night wandering. 02 El Born Boutiques, cocktails, tapas and some of the city’s prettiest streets. 03 Eixample Gaudí, shopping, wide boulevards and beautiful hotels. 04 Gràcia Village-like plazas, independent restaurants and local energy. 05 Barceloneta Beach mornings, seafood lunches and sunset waterfront walks.

DRINK

  1. Paradiso Creative cocktails hidden behind an unassuming entrance.
  2. Dr. Stravinsky Inventive drinks in a beautiful El Born cocktail bar.
  3. Bobby’s Free A playful hidden bar disguised behind a barbershop.
  4. Nevermind Skate-inspired dive-bar energy for a very casual night.
  5. Ale & Hop Craft beer and a favorite from the original Barcelona guide.
A personal travel photograph from Barcelona

FROM BRITTANY

Barcelona is one of those cities people enjoy more when they stop trying to complete it.

See the Gaudí buildings, absolutely—but also sit in a plaza, order vermouth, stay at lunch too long and follow the street that looks more interesting than the one on your itinerary.

From beach to bars, you will never go hungry, thirsty or pale.

Take this guide and go a little crazy, Barcelona style.

SHOP

DESIGNERS, BOUTIQUES & ESPADRILLES

01 Passeig de Gràcia Luxury flagships, Gaudí architecture and grand-city shopping. 02 El Born Independent boutiques, jewelry, gifts and beautiful side streets. 03 La Manual Alpargatera Traditional handmade espadrilles and an excellent Barcelona souvenir. 04 Santa Eulalia Historic luxury shopping with a beautifully curated selection. 05 Gràcia Small labels, local shops and less predictable finds.

DAY TRIPS

FOUR REASONS TO LEAVE THE CITY

01 Montserrat Mountain views, monastery history and the strongest first choice. 02 Girona Medieval streets, city walls and an easy historical escape. 03 Sitges Beach-town energy, pretty streets and a relaxed seaside day. 04 Costa Brava Coastal villages, clear water and a trip worth giving a full day.

SEE OR SKIP?

THE HONEST VERSION

LA RAMBLA

Walk it once. Spend the rest of the trip almost anywhere else.

BARCELONETA

Fun and convenient. Choose Bogatell when you want more breathing room.

LA BOQUERIA

Go early for the atmosphere. Avoid treating every stall as a guaranteed gem.

PAELLA ON LA RAMBLA

Skip the laminated-photo menus. Barcelona can do much better.

FC BARCELONA

See a match when the dates work—and verify the current venue before booking.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

SMALL DETAILS. BETTER TRIP.

01 BOOK THE ICONS

Reserve Sagrada Família, Park Güell and major Gaudí interiors early.

02 WATCH YOUR BELONGINGS

Pickpocketing happens. Stay aware without allowing fear to ruin the city.

03 USE T-CASUAL

The current ten-journey card is personal and cannot be shared.

04 WEAR WALKING SHOES

Barcelona is larger—and hillier—than many first-time visitors expect.

05 DO NOT RUSH DINNER

Lean into later evenings and leave room for another round.
